Oncologist, Hematologist, & Pioneer in Integrative Medicine

About Dr. Barry Boyd, MD, MS

Dr. Boyd has been a practicing medical oncologist since 1993. In 1998, he founded the Integrative medicine Program at Greenwich Hospital-Yale Health Systems, where he is currently the Director of Nutritional Oncology. Dr. Boyd is an Assistant Clinical Professor, the Director of Curriculum in Nutrition, and the Director of Curriculum of Integrative Medicine at Yale School of Medicine, as well as an affiliate member of the Yale Cancer Center. He was previously Associate Clinical Director of the Center for Complementary and Integrative Medicine at Cornell-Weill Center/New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. Boyd is a pioneer in the field of integrative cancer care, with a targeted focus on nutritional support for cancer patents. Incorporating emergent, evidence-based medical oncology with cancer-specific nutritional counseling, he combines comprehensive support for the healing process. Dr. Boyd is the founding president of the Integrative Cancer Care Research Foundation and a board member of Environment and Human Health, Inc., a nonprofit organization made up of physicians and public health professionals dedicated to the purpose of protecting health from environmental harms.

He serves as an editorial board member on the medical journal Integrative Cancer Therapies and is a board member of Environment and Human Health, a Yale University based environmental advisory group. In addition to his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College, Professor Boyd holds a Master’s Degree in Human Nutritional Biochemistry from Columbia University. He completed his Residency and Fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center.

A pioneer in the field of integrative medical oncology/hematology, Dr. Boyd authored The Missing Link: Insulin and Cancer as well as numerous medical articles and reviews. His book The Cancer Recovery Plan is the first to address the link between the little understood metabolic syndrome and cancer.

Dr. Boyd serves on the American Cancer Society Task Force on Cancer Guidelines, including the Survivorship subcommittee, where he focuses upon the use of adjunct therapies in cancer survivors, the role of obesity and insulin resistance in cancer recurrence and survival, and the relationship between stress, insulin resistance, and outcomes relative to cancer.

Dr. Boyd's Research

Dr. Boyd’s research interests center on the interaction of vitamins and nutrients with chemotherapy insulin resistance in cancer causation, and progression and utility of non-conventional approaches, including mind-body techniques (behavioral) in combination with conventional cancer treatment.

In addition, he has a strong interest in integrating behavioral approaches into in-patient care, including the introduction of preoperative relaxation techniques in reducing postoperative pain and other complications in both oncology and non-oncology settings.
